We also have a 7 month old Sheltie and her teeth are normal looking. I don't remember her teeth looking this way. Also, his coat is very dry, dull, and flaky. His skin has always been very pink and a bit itchy. How can we improve his coat condition?
My 5 month old Sheltie puppy's teeth look very small and some are missing, is he just getting adult teeth?
At 5 months his tiny teeth are his new adult teeth and since he's not finished teething yet, you're seeing some gaps. Nothing to worry about.
As for his dry coat, give him (and your other sheltie, too) 1 tablespoon of veg. oil daily in the food, or much better even than that, a salmon oil capsule a day. You'll see a huge difference in the condition of the skin and coat (silky and shiny), especially in the dry winter weather.
Reply:Yes, your sheltie is losing baby teeth. Most of the time, they end up swallowing the baby teeth. Sometimes, the baby tooth can be there and the adult tooth right next to it. This happened recently with my 6 month old Aussie. Her adult front left eye-tooth came in and it took several days for the baby one to fall out. It's amazing how quickly their adult teeth come in and are just there!
As far as the coat and skin go, I would suggest reading the label on the type of food you're feeding. If you feed a low-grade dog food, this can dramatically affect the dogs coat and skin. I have 3 mini Eskies (fluffy white dogs) who I recently changed to a higher grade food - and what a difference in their coats. They shed a whole lot less too. Also, we have them groomed once a month now, which also helps. It can get expensive (especially with 4 dogs - I also have a 6 month old Australian Shepherd), but to us, it's so worth the $35 to keep them healthy and shedding less. If you find that there is a lot of by-products listed in the first 4 or 5 ingredients, definitely change your food. Some really great dog food that's not that expensive are Merrick's, Natural Choice, Lick My Chops. Stay away from anything that Wal-Mart sells, like Ole Roy, Beneful, Pedigree, etc. They're very low quality and don't do much for your dogs health.
I would also suggest your talk to your vet about this issue as well. That's what they're paid for, so use them as much as you can as a source of good information.

USE A SHAMPOO WITH OATMEAL, YOU CAN ALSO USE OATMEAL CONDITIONER. YOU CAN PUT VITAMIN E IN HIS FOOD. THEY ALSO MAKE CORTISONE SPRAY WITCH HELPS VERY WELL.YOU CAN ALSO GET THE DOG FOOD THAT PROMOTES A HEALTHY SHINY COAT(ALOT OF BRANDS HAVE IT)
Reply:yep, it sounds like your puppy is just teething. the small teeth are its milk teeth and the one's that are missing just fell out to make room for the adult teeth. At about 5 months puppies do start teething and your 7 month old puppy probably already has his adult teeth and you probably never noticed that he lost his puppy teeth. As for the coat condition, I'm really not sure what works.
Reply:He's just loossing his baby teeth and getting his new ones... nothing to worry about. If he keeps lossing teeth though and new ones come in, then talk to your vet, I hardly dout that will happen though.

I'm thinking of knocking out the front two and putting in one big gold tooth so I look classy.

You could be missing ALL your teeeeeeeeeeeth and be non-white trash in my eyes. Just think, if you have 1 big tooth instead of 2 teeeeeeeeeeeeeth, you don't have as much to floss, or you'll never have a peice of food or something, that everyone is stairing at, but fail to tell you, when you're talking to them!

What are the potential problems of a missing tooth?
I have just had my first molar on the bottom left removed and my dentist has told me that I don't need to do anything about it. I have been researching missing teeth and discovered that there are tremendous problems associated with it like shifting or drifting teeth, bone problems, increased decay. My dentist told me not to worry as the teeth won't drift. I'm confused and worried. Should I visit a new dentist after the gum has healed to get a denture to prevent drifting? I can't afford a bridge or implant right now. Is it essential I do this as soon as possible, or was he right in saying I didn't need to do anything?

A 3 unit bridge would mean the two teeth on either side of the missing tooth would have to be prepared (shaved down) to accept the bridge.
Some offices do make a small partial called a Nesbitt, but that can come loose and there is a potential risk of swallowing it.
If you have any other teeth missing a partial can be made.
A Maryland bridge has wings on either side of the missing tooth that are cemented into place but more offices shy away from those for a posterior tooth, too difficult to retain and made as only a temporary fix.
Get a second opinion and weigh out your options.

Instead of grinding down the teeth on either side to accomodate the 3UB, notches are put in the teeth on the side of the existing teeth facing the space instead. An impression is taken, and it is sent to the lab for processing after a color-match, or shade, is chosen.
The finished product looks like a tooth with a 'wing' on either side, which are used to get cemented into the notches...and it's permanent.
